John Bonzo, che non riposi in pace ma continui a picchiare duro i tamburi del paradiso, lo conosciamo tutti per i groove potenti e arditi e le terzine/sestine in combinazioni laocoontiche su cassa/tom/timpani ecc.
Che ci fosse una versione afro-cubana di Jonh Bonham è forse meno noto. Ma è per questo che esistono i professori del Berklee college of Music ed è per questo che esiste Rod Morgenstein.

Morgenstein in un video didattico su MusicRadar.com spiega come nell’ultimo album dei Led Zeppelin, In through the out door, John Bonham si faccia notare su terreni meno noti del suo drumming, che, diversamente da quello che credono molti estimatori post mortem, è molto più ricco e complesso del terziname incastrato.

In this video, Morgenstein demonstrates how John Bonham used a 6/8 time signature and helped create a track that “just flows with the right amount of cool shuffle. It’s a tricky style to tackle at first, because you’re playing parts that interlock in some strange ways, but that’s the beauty of the bembe: once you master it, it becomes effortless, and it can really spice up your rock drumming.
